Avira Free Mac Security is a free virus checker for both consumers and businesses.
The developers of Avira claim to have based the software on extensive interviews with users to create the one of the most usable and effective virus checkers on the market.
It's a very simple and clean virus checker with a clear interface and doesn't disturb day-to-day use of your Mac.
Basic but functional
Avira Free Mac Security is based on the same technology as Avira Free Anti-Virus. Avira Free Mac Security protects in real-time and if detected, viruses can be removed in one click. Avira also includes some Browser Safety features that are currently only available for Chrome, but will soon be available on Firefox. which add safety ratings to search results. There's also a browser tracking blocker, which stops sites and companies from tracking your online behavior.

Avira Free Mac Security follows a “back to basics” format with a simple interface that's straightforward and easy on the eye. It requires very little configuration and everything is automated from scans to virus database updates. Although Avira Free Mac Security makes checks in Real-Time and automatically quarantines anything that may damage your Mac, you can of course perform manual scans, customize scan depth as well as schedule scans.

Version 3 is a big improvement.
Version 3 of this program is awesome. Nice GUI and works without problems in the background.

@Avira wary.
It may be because Avira only works properly with OS X 10.6+ and so will not function correctly on an iMac.

Avira wary.
Loaded onto my iMac and it went berko, crazy! Thought I had stuffed computer.
It made program Spotlight go into index mode and got stuck. it took me time to realise that computer was just running VERY slow. Deleted Avira and all is good. I am now wary of this program. More
